Meeting: Friday, November 21, 7-9 p.m. @ Barnes & Noble, Bloomington, IL

This month we'll feature those really great books that students just aren't reading.

Maybe they have an awful cover...or a slow start...or a vague title...or an older copyright date....

Here are some suggestions:

A Face First by Priscilla Cummings
Kelley wakes up in the burn ward of a hospital after an accident. She must heal both mentally and physically while trying to lead a "normal" life as a junior high student.

The Misfits by James Howe
A group of friends starts a No-Names Party for the school election in an attempt to create a kinder, gentler student body.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
A sleeper from the author of the Gregor the Overlander series. In a not-too-distant future, 24 teens fight to the death on live TV. Read to find out why...

Skellig by David Almond
From the oldies-but-goodies files...a young boy investigates an abandoned, decrepit garage and finds an abandoned, decrepit creature inside. Is it a man? Is it a bird? Is it an angel? Beautifully written!

From John Fischer, YA Librarian at BPL: Turkeys.pdf

Here is a School Library Journal Article about "sleepers," but it's from 1998.
Still, it's worth a look: http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA152996.html
